Microsoft is ending support for Cortana on Windows. The software giant says it will “no longer support Cortana as a standalone app on Windows” starting later this year. Microsoft had already put Cortana on dusty shelves, although not officially. Concrete steps were actually taken, especially with the integration of productive artificial intelligence tools into Windows and the company’s software.

Goodbye Cortana

During its Build conference in May, Microsoft announced its new Windows Copilot tool that will live in your taskbar and use artificial intelligence to help you do everything Cortana did when it was widely released, and more. It was no surprise that Cortana was discontinued in Windows with Copilot. Windows Copilot will serve as a comprehensive tool, including summarizing content, rewriting text, asking questions, adjusting your computer’s settings, and more.

Microsoft first brought Cortana to Windows 10 in 2015, allowing you to set reminders, open apps, and ask questions using voice commands. But over the years, Microsoft has been slowly removing Cortana from the Windows experience. The digital assistant lost its place in the taskbar with the release of Windows 11. Microsoft also shut down the Cortana app on iOS and Android in 2020 and ended support for Cortana on its Surface headphones and other devices.

It’s unclear exactly when Microsoft will remove Cortana from Windows. Microsoft says that Cortana will continue to be used in Outlook mobile and Microsoft Teams, even though the middle is being removed from Windows. However, let me point out that this won’t take long. Teams and Outlook will soon integrate deeper with artificial intelligence.
