If you own a PC and iPhone and want to use iMessage on your Windows device, you may be pleased to hear that Microsoft has taken a small step in that direction.
In a blog post, Microsoft announced that it has launched a preview of iMessage running on Windows via the Phone Link app, which allows both Android and iOS users to connect their phones to enable certain functions on their computers.
Those who attend the preview will see a new option to add an iPhone in the Phone Link app. These users, once connected, will be able to send an iMessage from their Windows 11 PC via their iPhone. Microsoft says users will be able to make phone calls, see their contacts, and send messages via iMessage, although this is limited at the moment.
Unfortunately, it looks like iMessage support will be limited. The blog post states that users cannot reply to group messages or post photos or videos via their computers. They also won’t be able to see their conversation history for existing conversations.
While this feature is limited, iPhone users will be able to send messages via their PC for the first time, and that message will actually be sent as an iMessage from their iPhone. In other words, it is a very useful development for users who use both PC and iPhone and prefer iMessage.
The feature is currently only available to developers and those who are part of the Windows Insider Program, and the company says testing has begun.
