Microsoft is reportedly working on a major update that will improve the user interface and features in File Explorer in Windows 11. Windows Central reports that the new File Explorer will deeply integrate Microsoft 365 and OneDrive and modernize the design.

File Explorer will undergo major changes

In the internal examples obtained, a new search box and new home button in File Explorer stand out. In addition to the revised user interface design, the header designs have also been changed. The File Explorer home page, on the other hand, shows Microsoft 365 integration with items related to meetings, downloads, and coworkers’ comments. It seems that the position of existing title buttons like “new”, “copy” and “paste” will also be changed.
The quick navigation menu on the left has also been modernized. The details pane is also integrated and enriched with Microsoft 365. Thanks to the Microsoft 365 integration, users will be able to see email threads and recent comments about files shared between multiple colleagues or emailed via the cloud.

An easier use will be offered for touch screens

The vast majority of these changes over the imported ones will make File Explorer easier for touchscreens. Additionally, Microsoft is working on a richer photo viewing experience for File Explorer via a new “Gallery” area. Users will be able to get a larger preview when they hover over the image.

It is also stated that the “tag” feature will come to Microsoft’s File Explorer. This feature will allow you to organize and categorize specific files using keywords and colors, just like in macOS’ Finder.

If Microsoft, which brought the tab design a while ago, brings these changes, it will have made the most comprehensive File Explorer update since Windows 8, which was released 10 years ago. It is stated that Microsoft aims to offer this refreshed File Explorer to users before the end of 2023. Therefore, we can assume that most of the extensive updates will come with Windows 11 23H2.
