Beta testers recently reported that a number of features, including viewing system files, were missing from Windows 11 File Explorer. The developers, on the other hand, think that they are underused and outdated, so they want to make some settings available only through the operating system’s registry.

Users were extremely dissatisfied with Microsoft’s decision, and the company listened to the backlash and promised to cancel its plans to reform the interface. The company will cancel these unwanted changes in a future Windows 11 update. Microsoft has announced that developers will look for different ways to optimize the interface and File Explorer, but will not compromise on functionality.

Some functions may be optional

For example, some functions can be made ‘optional’. So they can hide these options in some kind of additional menu. It is noted that this will provide a balance between file processing efficiency, flexibility of explorer settings, and the appearance of the system.

Previously, the following options were planned to be removed from the system:

  • Viewing system files
  • Displaying drive letters,
  • Displaying icons instead of thumbnails,
  • Displaying folder descriptions,
  • Showing encrypted NTFS files in a different color
  • Displaying the total size of files in folder descriptions
