The Microsoft Edge browser has been found to flag ChromeSetup.exe, the installation file of Google Chrome, as potentially harmful. This bug detected in Microsoft Edge 116 stable version seems to be related to Edge’s built-in security feature. Edge’s security features alert users when downloading risky files. It seems that Chrome’s setup file is mistakenly treated the same.

Microsoft marks Chrome as malware

When downloading Chrome using Microsoft Edge, as shown in the screenshot above, a warning message pops up: “ChromeSetup.exe may harm your device. Do you want to keep it anyway?” Edge, and indeed Chrome, show similar warnings for files that are suspected to be malicious or downloaded from an unsafe location. Users can then choose to “Keep” or “Delete” the downloaded file.
On the other hand, Microsoft constantly advertises Edge to Windows users. The company has tried different methods so far to keep users in their browser. For example, when users try to access Chrome through Edge and use Microsoft’s Bing search engine, they encounter various warnings that prevent them from downloading Chrome: “You don’t need to download a new web browser. Microsoft offers a fast, secure, and safe solution that can help you save time and money. recommends using Microsoft Edge for a modern web experience. Try it now.”
If that warning isn’t enough to convince you, Chrome’s download page states, “Microsoft Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome, with added confidence from Microsoft. Now navigate safely.” shows the warning. On the other hand, Microsoft has not made any official statement as to why it has flagged Chrome (ChromeSetup.exe) as potentially harmful. The issue may already be resolved in all versions of Microsoft Edge 116.
