In a new study by scientists at the Vrije University of Amsterdam, around 80% of meat and dairy products from tested farm animals were found to contain microplastics. The team points to bait as the likely cause.
Animal food contains plastic
As a result of their research, the team found that all twelve pellet and shredded feed samples contained plastic. No contamination was observed in fresh food.
In addition, seven of the eight beef samples tested contained plastic particles, and at least one type of plastic was found in five of the eight pork samples. Plastic was also seen in 18 of 25 milk samples tested.
Heather Leslie, co-author of the study: Animals are exposed to plastic particles in their habitats and are able to absorb at least some of these particles. This study should be an incentive to further explore the full extent of exposure and associated risks. “Producing plastic-free feed for animals could be a way to ensure livestock is not exposed to plastic particles.”
The researchers say precautions are needed to keep livestock plastic-free and safe for consumption. Mainly, it will be tried to ensure that animal feeds do not contain plastic particles.
