Mexican Federal Congress Senator Indira Kempis has introduced a bill that will make Bitcoin legal currency in the country.

The document submitted to the parliament included the amendment that Bitcoin will be considered as a legal tender in the Republic of Mexico.

Kempis did not mention Bitcoin or any other digital asset in these proposals, although he submitted two proposals to the legislature last April for a change in the law.

Kempis stressed that almost half of Mexicans do not have access to the financial system, and he argued that this is a big problem for the country. According to the senator, Bitcoin can help avoid these troubles.

“Several actions need to be taken so that the use of technology can encourage and guarantee financial inclusion”

However, Mexico continues to work to launch a CBDC. The country plans to introduce the digital peso into circulation by 2024 to help its citizens overcome difficulties in accessing the financial system.
