In the statements made by Facebook’s umbrella company Meta, it was stated that 50 thousand users on social media platforms were exposed to “espionage” activities and monitored. The US-based giant company announced that 1,500 accounts related to these detected activities were suspended.

The company added that these 50 thousand users were informed about the espionage they were exposed to. After that, it was stated that 1,500 accounts linked to these activities were suspended for violating the rules.

According to the giant company’s statements, companies that continue their ‘espionage’ activities; It is located in countries such as North Macedonia, Israel and India. In addition, there is a group operating in this way in China; However, it was reported by Meta that the identity of the people in this group has not yet been determined. According to officials, these companies and groups spread around the world and aimed to gather information by tracking users in more than 100 countries.

Spyware is used

In Meta’s statements, it was noted that users living in the USA, New Zealand, Mexico, Poland and Hong Kong were most affected by these activities. Authorities believe that these malicious companies access their victims with the help of fake accounts and try to track users by installing spyware.

Previously, WhatsApp, a subsidiary of Meta, filed a lawsuit against Israel-based software company NSO for such a reason. In the lawsuit filed, it was stated that NSO’s spying software named ‘Pegasus’ was used to monitor people. NSO, on the other hand, denied these allegations and said that Pegasus was used to fight terrorism. Due to these increasing pressures, the news that Pegasus would be disabled had started to spread recently.
