With the trend of artificial intelligence services, big technology companies started to make larger investments in this field. An artificial intelligence project, published as a demo by Meta in 2021, has been made open source with a new decision.

You will be able to turn your drawings into animation.

The animation project, developed by Meta’s The Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team and whose demo was published in 2021, has been made open source with the company’s final decision. The web demo released in 2021 asks you to draw a human figure in a small box, and the artificial intelligence model turns your drawing into animations of dancing, funny, walking and jumping.

The project, called Animated Drawings, uses object detection models, pose estimation models, and image processing-based segmentation methods to capture a digital version of your drawing. Traditional computer graphics techniques are then used to deform and animate the image. Meta further developed the model using 1.6 million different user drawings during the demo, indicating that the project will now be stronger. In addition, during the demo, the company said that only human figure drawings will work, but it seems that the project is also working on different drawings such as logos, anime characters and fish.

In a blog post, Meta talked about the benefits of the open source community, saying, “By publishing models and code as open source, it provides a starting point for project developers to develop and expand the project, to foster a culture of innovation and collaboration in the open source community.”
