Meta aims to overhaul the virtual reality world of Horizon Worlds to include more video games, as the social platform struggles to find a large audience. Horizon Worlds, the free virtual reality social network where people can create avatars and interact with other gamers, has cost the firm’s Reality Labs unit tens of billions of dollars so far.

Metaverse is being renewed

To make Horizon Worlds more compelling, Meta now has an in-house studio called Ouro Interactive focused on making first-party virtual reality games, said Vishal Shah, Vice President of Metaverse at Meta. The studio’s first VR shooter, Super Rumble, was also released the other day and reportedly features better graphics and accuracy than other VR games built on Horizon Worlds.

This video game will also be one of the first VR video games that Meta plans to test when it releases the mobile version of Horizon Worlds, Shah said. “This is definitely more than just a new world,” Shah said, referring to it as “the next generation of Horizon Worlds.”

Critical steps for Horizon Worlds

Saying that as Meta builds new Horizon Worlds, more video games will be released, Shah explained that Meta’s VR platform has also been revamped to support higher quality and more complex games and provide more tools for third-party developers. Also, when Meta releases the mobile version of Horizon Worlds, the app is planned to act as a bridge between smartphones and the company’s Quest VR headsets.

Horizon Worlds’ refresh comes during Meta’s latest earnings report, which showed the company’s Reality Labs units posted $276 million in revenue and $3.7 billion in operating losses. The Reality Labs unit has lost over $21 billion since the start of 2022. The total loss of the unit, which was established in 2020, is over $ 40 billion.
