The issue of protecting children on social media has been discussed for a long time. Giants such as Meta, X, TikTok, byteDance, Snap, Alphabet each have ongoing lawsuits on this issue.

The lawsuits have many different topics, such as “addiction, misleading, failure to ensure confidentiality”. Perhaps the biggest step taken so far on this issue came from the US Senate. The Senate summoned five major social media companies to testify.

CEOs of Meta, X, TikTok, Snap and Discord will testify

The US Senate will hear from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, X CEO Linda Yaccarino, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel and Discord CEO Jason Citron in the session to be held on January 31, 2024. Among these names, Zuckerberg and Chew had previously announced that they were willing to testify. Yaccarino, Spiegel and Citron had rejected invitations to testify in previous meetings. Senators Dick Durbin and Lindsey Graham also issued subpoenas for these three CEOs.

Senators also made statements regarding the process. In a joint statement, the two senators stated that “CEOs were given the chance to testify about their failure to protect children online.” “We knew from the beginning that our efforts to keep children safe online would be met with hesitation from the tech giants,” the senators said. “In the end, they are being forced to admit that they have failed when it comes to protecting children’s safety online. Now that all five companies have cooperated, we expect statements from their CEOs.” .Parents and children demand action.” he said.

In the past period, steps have been taken and regulations regarding online security have been made in various states in the USA and the EU. Still, some critics say the new regulations are too broad and could do more harm than good.
