As the frightening effects of climate change continue to increase rapidly, many companies from different sectors are taking steps towards a more sustainable future. The automotive industry, which plays an important role in carbon emissions, is the most notable of these. Manufacturers plan to abandon internal combustion engine vehicles and switch to all-electric models by the 2030s.

German automobile giant Mercedes-Benz is one of these brands. The company, which wants to produce electric cars in every segment in the coming years, aims to direct all new vehicle architectures to electric models by 2025, and to switch to fully electric vehicles by 2030. Continuing its moves on this issue, the manufacturer has now announced its new plans.

Mercedes to build a large number of wind turbines in Germany

Mercedes-Benz has announced that it will install several wind turbines on its test track in Papenburg, northern Germany. The auto giant said that with its new ‘wind farm’, the company aims to achieve 100 MW of energy output by 2025, which corresponds to more than 15% of electricity use in Germany.

Exactly how many turbines will be built in the region was not mentioned in the statements. However, we can say that to achieve more than 100 MW, the company needs more than 36 turbines, because a single wind turbine produces an average of 2.75 MW of energy.

Goal to be completely carbon-neutral by 2039

With this move, the company has added a new one to the things it has done to create a greener future. The Germany-based manufacturer plans to cut its emissions in half by 2030 and become completely carbon-neutral by 2039. In addition, meeting 70% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2030 is among Mercedes’ goals.

Finally, Mercedes, which has already made significant progress in its climate targets, stated that starting this year, it will only purchase electricity from renewable sources for its facilities located in more than 100 locations. The automaker has also managed to be carbon-neutral in all its production plants since the beginning of 2022.
