Mercedes officially recalls these electric SUV models

In a total of 12,308 vehicles produced between 1 April 2021 and 31 October 2023, it was determined that battery cells have a risk of overheating and this pose a potential danger that could lead to fire.

The source of the problem is shown as inconsistencies in the production process of the batteries. It was found that certain cells were not safe enough in quality control stages, the existing battery management system could cause overloading in these cells, which may cause the cells to make short circuit over time.

Battery systems in electric vehicles are considered one of the most critical components in the vehicle, while such security problems create a serious risk of reputation for brands. The process of recalling has gained formal after the audits carried out by regulatory institutions in China.

Mercedes’ production partner in China Beijing Benz announced that it will make a software update to the battery management system to resolve the problem. This update will be implemented free of charge in authorized services.

However, until the official process is completed, vehicle owners are advised not to charge their batteries over 80 percent. The limitation of the battery level will help reduce the risk of fire by preventing overloading of cells.

Mercedes-Benz had previously initiated recall processes in different models due to security problems. In 2024, EQS and EQE SUV models were found to lose power during driving and a recall for these vehicles was taken.

At a time when the competition in the electric vehicle market is increasing, such technical problems faced by Mercedes are a major examination in terms of reliability perception of the brand. So what do you think about this? You can share your opinions with us in the comments section below.
