Continuously developing technology brings innovations to many sectors. The automotive industry is also one of those affected by these technological developments. Giant automakers such as Tesla and Mercedez-Benz are also launching the autonomous driving systems they have developed and making moves that can revolutionize the industry.

Now, German automaker Mercedes-Benz has broken new ground in autonomous driving technologies. The third-level autonomous driving system of the giant company called ‘Drive Pilot’ received international approval and was recorded as the first system to achieve this.

The first autonomous driving system to receive international approval

In the official statements made on Thursday, it was stated that Mercedes’ autonomous driving system complies with the UN-R157 criteria set by the United Nations. After that, it was announced that the third-level autonomous driving technology of the German automobile giant was the first system to be approved internationally. In addition, it was stated in the statements that ‘Drive Pilot’ can be used in the new S-Class and EQS sedans, which will be released next year.

Let’s talk about some levels of autonomous driving. First of all, it should be noted that Tesla vehicles use second level, that is, partial driving automation. In this system, the drivers’ attention must be completely on the road and they must be able to take control at any time, so the vehicle’s self-driving is insufficient in second-level systems.

However, the third-level autonomous driving system that Mercedes drives, also known as conditional driving automation, is a much more advanced technology. In this system, the vehicles’ ability to perceive the environment increases, they can make critical decisions on their own, and they can drive on their own in a safer way. Nevertheless, experts underline that the attention of drivers who own this vehicle should be on the road.

Can be used up to 60 km/h

According to the statements, this system, which has been approved by Mercedes, will be used from next year. Within the scope of the decisions made, the third level autonomous driving system will be able to be used in heavy traffic up to 60 km / h and will be able to make the necessary moves without driver support. This system using cameras, lidar sensors and microphones; It will allow vehicles to go by themselves, detect emergency vehicles, and make necessary braking.

According to experts, thanks to this technology, Mercedes users will be able to deal with other things while driving, provided that their attention is not too distracted. In the second-level systems, it was recommended not to make such movements. In addition, it was emphasized in the statements that ‘Drive Pilot’ can only be used on previously mapped highways.

Investments in autonomous driving systems are increasing rapidly. Earlier, Audi also announced the third level autonomous system for the A8 model. In addition, Japanese automaker Honda has stated that it plans to launch vehicles with third-level autonomous driving technology.
