TrendForce, which analyzes the market, predicts that memory prices will decrease further. In this context, memory chip prices are expected to continue their downward trend until the first half of 2023 and perhaps beyond.

Memory prices keep falling

TrendForce noted the continued declines in DRAM and NAND memory prices over the past three months. DRAM prices fell by 23 percent and NAND prices by 28 percent in the corresponding quarter. Memory chip prices peaked during Covid, thanks to strong demand for consumer electronics. This peak began to decline in late 2021 and early 2022.

The research firm predicts that weakening consumer demand amid high interest rates, rising inflation and a weak global economy will continue to affect prices until at least the first half of 2023. Currently, Samsung, Micron, SK Hynix, Intel and other chip manufacturers are already suffering significant losses in this area. It is said that the prices will decrease further to increase the demand.

How long the downturn will last depends mostly on the rate of increase in consumer spending. When economic conditions tend to improve, consumers will start to throw their hands in their pockets with falling prices. On the other hand, Samsung can make a quick start to sales in 2023 with the Galaxy S23 series, which is expected to be announced at the Unpacked event on February 1.
