US electric car Tesla is not just a company focused on electric cars. In addition, it offers important solutions to its customers in the energy sector. In this context, the automaker announced that it will begin construction of a new Megapack plant this year. It has been announced that this new facility will be established in Shanghai, China.

Tesla expands Megapack production

To support the production of the Megapack factory in California, Tesla is opening a factory in Shanghai with the capacity to produce 10,000 Megapacks of energy products per year. At the signing ceremony held in Shanghai, it was reported that the foundations of the new facility will be laid in the third quarter of 2023 and production will begin in the second quarter of 2024. With the ten thousand Megapack units to be produced, 40 gigawatt hours of energy storage per year will be achieved.

As the world moves towards using more renewable energy, Tesla will leverage China’s world-leading battery supply chain to increase production and lower costs of Megapack lithium-ion battery units to meet the growing global demand for energy storage.

If you say what is Tesla Megapack, in short, it is a large-scale rechargeable lithium-ion battery stationary energy storage product. You can think of them as a kind of powerbank, but they are much larger. A single Megapack product can store 3MWh of energy. Each container-sized battery can store enough energy to power approximately 3,600 homes for one hour.
