MediaTek seems to have found its answer to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, which we encounter in many gaming phones: launching an updated version of last year’s high-end hardware.

The company introduced the new Dimensity 9200+ SoC (system-on-chip) with improvements that will be noticeable especially in games. Common speed upgrades include main Cortex-X3 cores (3.05 GHz to 3.35 GHz), three Cortex-A715 cores (2.85 GHz to 3 GHz), and four Cortex-A510 efficiency cores (1. from 0.8 GHz to 2 GHz). More importantly, the company says it has boosted the Immortalis-G715 graphics by 17 percent, so games that were previously hard to play can be expected to be smoother.

The Dimensity 9200+ is manufactured using TSMC’s latest 4 nanometer process, potentially extending battery life and allowing thinner phones to be produced. There is no change in WiFi 7 support, AI processing unit and image signal processor, but we can say that these parts are still quite good. For example, WiFi 7 is still not a complete standard, and routers that support it are extremely rare.

Phones using Dimensity 9200+ are on the way

It is possible that we will see the first phones based on this chip very soon. MediaTek expects the first Dimensity 9200+ phones to launch later this month, but the names of its customers have not been revealed for now.

Still, the question of whether this refresh is sufficient has yet to be answered. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has only a slight advantage over the regular 9200, so the higher clocked 9200+ may have the advantage. However, it is certain that Qualcomm will not wait without doing anything and will offer its own update.

Still, the launch of this chip could be a big deal for mobile gamers. Finding a solid competitor will give Qualcomm even more reason to innovate in the Android gaming world. This could lead to both greater variety in phones and more aggressive pricing.
