MediaTek skipped the upcoming Dimensity 9300 launch and surprisingly issued a joint press release with TSMC, officially announcing that both companies are developing the world’s first 3nm chipset. Although MediaTek has passed Apple’s own 3nm SoC, the A17 Bionic chip, which will be introduced next week on paper, it will have to wait a little longer for the market. Because it has been announced that this chip will enter volume production in 2024.

MediaTek and TSMC develop the 3nm chip

MediaTek and TSMC have not yet officially named the 3nm chipset, but we can say that it will probably carry the ‘Dimensity’ title. In addition, TSMC’s Senior Vice President of European and Asian Sales Dr. Cliff Hou points to better chipsets, stating that both companies will continue to work on next-generation production processes.

Perhaps the biggest trademark of TSMC’s 3nm process will be energy efficiency. MediaTek states in its press release that compared to the Taiwanese manufacturer’s N5 node, the next-gen 3nm chip provides an 18 percent performance increase at the same power level. The new technology consumes 32 percent less power at the same speeds, with a 60 percent increase in logic density. This efficiency improvement is quite ambitious. It also gives an idea of the capabilities of the A17 Bionic.

On the other hand, as the Dimensity 9300 announcement approaches, the volume production of the new 3nm chipset is expected to take place in 2024, as mentioned above. This means that ultimately victory will belong to Apple’s A17 Bionic, which is said to be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, giving it a one-year edge over the competition.
