Eating meat is a habit as old as human history. However, in recent years, diets that avoid meat, such as veganism, have become increasingly common. Vegans argue that eating meat harms both animal rights and the future of the planet.
990 scientists who gathered against this argument of vegans published a ‘statement’. In this statement, scientists stated that animal husbandry and meat production do not harm the planet, on the contrary, they are beneficial and contribute greatly to human health.
‘Meat Declaration’ published by 990 scientists
Emphasizing that eating meat is essential for human health, the statement said, “Meat is one of the best sources of vital nutrients such as protein, iron, zinc, selenium, and vitamin B12. Meat consumption strengthens the immune system, increases muscle mass, protects bone health, and contributes to mental development. contributes”.
The statement also stated that eating meat does not harm the environment, on the contrary, it is part of a sustainable agriculture. “Meat production helps conserve natural resources and increase biodiversity. Animals can digest grassland plants and turn them into food for humans to use. In addition, animal manure increases soil fertility and reduces the use of chemical fertilizers,” they said.
Scientists who signed the statement warn that reducing meat consumption can harm both human health and the environment. Nutritional disorders such as iron deficiency anemia, protein-energy deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency can be seen in people who do not consume meat. Also, as meat consumption declines, demand for plant-based foods will increase, which could lead to expansion of farmland and deforestation.
Finally, the signatories also emphasize that the published articles on the dangers of meat consumption are scientifically flawed: “Removing fresh meat and dairy products from meals is harmful to human health. Women, children, the elderly and the low-income will be particularly affected.”
