After Russia’s attack on Ukraine, governments and companies from all over the world started to impose various sanctions against Russia. The US-based fast food chain McDonald’s was also among the companies that imposed sanctions on Russia, but the withdrawal process of McDonald’s from Russia was a little different than many other companies.
Instead of withdrawing from the country altogether, McDonald’s transferred its operations in Russia as a franchise. Although the famous restaurant chain could continue to bring the same foods to Russian customers, it had to go through a rebranding process. For this reason, McDonald’s logo has been changed specifically for Russia.
McDonald’s original logo and the new logo to be used in Russia
When we look at the new logo of McDonald’s to be used in its franchise operation in Russia, there are two pieces on a green background. we see cross fries and a hamburger patty. Although you can see McDonald’s letter ‘M’ when you look carefully at the logo, it is obvious that the new logo is not closely related to the original McDonald’s logo.
McDonald’s original logo, again in the shape of an ‘M’, consisting of two yellow belts, has a history of about 72 years and has an important recognition almost all over the world. In fact, the logo is so old that McDonald’s presence in Russia is almost half the age of the logo.
By the way; Serbian investor Alexander Govor, who bought McDonald’s operations in Russia, has to change not only the logo but also the name of the restaurants. Although we understand that the name will start with the letter ‘M’ in the shape of the new logo, the new name of McDonald’s Russia is not clear yet.
