Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum, in his statements a while ago, said that a decision was taken regarding the Marmara Sea. In this decision, taken within the scope of the fight against mucilage, which emerged at the end of last year and became largely invisible thanks to the studies carried out in 2021, it was stated that the Sea of ​​​​Marmara will be a Special Environmental Protection Area. Now, there has been a new development on this issue.

The Marmara Sea and the Islands have been declared a Special Environmental Protection Area with a Presidential Decision in today’s issue of the Official Gazette. The management of the area, the boundaries of which have been determined according to this decision, will continue according to a decree issued in 1989. The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of National Defense will work in coordination to protect the region.

According to the decision taken, all environmental researches related to the area you see in the above sketch and all efforts to protect the environment will be approved by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. In addition, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change will take care of the measures to be taken regarding the activities in the environment. The process of extracting fisheries within the borders will continue under the coordination of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

On the other hand; All military activities in the Marmara Sea and the Islands, which have been declared as Special Environmental Protection Areas, will be under the coordination of the Ministry of National Defense. The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure will fulfill its responsibilities in the region. In this way, it will be tried to protect the region and ensure that the mucilage issue that broke out last year does not resurface this year.
