Former product manager of Facebook made a statement to US lawmakers
Frances Haugen, former product manager of Facebook’s civil misinformation team, made some statements to US lawmakers. In this context, he explained how the firm’s firm stance on user security created higher profit returns. He also noted that Facebook does little for people involved in planning violence.
The title of the article published on the website of TIME magazine was given as “What kind of showdown did Facebook force by closing the team that put people before profits”. The article speaks highly of the company’s civic integrity team in general.
He highlights how the social media giant’s decisions have alienated members of the team who are battling misinformation and hateful content. Facebook terminated the relevant team in 2020. In the end, this situation caused Frances Haugen to make statements.
“Haugen’s statements led to tighter regulations”
Related article writer Billy Perrigo said: “Whatever the future direction of Facebook, it’s clear that discontent has arisen internally. Haugen’s leak and testimony led to calls for tighter regulation. At this point, it has improved the quality of public debate about the impact of social media. ”
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg denied that what Haugen said was not true. Zuckerberg’s statements were as follows:
“The argument that we are deliberately pushing content that pisses people off for profit is pretty illogical. I don’t know of any tech companies that set out to make products that make people angry or depressed. Moral, commercial, and product incentives all point in the opposite direction. ”
