The big news that the fans of the series have been waiting for has arrived: A new Mafia game is coming. Publisher 2K Games and studio Hanger 13, working on Mafia III and Mafia: Definitive Edition, officially announced the good news in a blog post celebrating the series’ 20th anniversary.
“I am happy to confirm that we have started working on a brand new Mafia project,” said Hanger 13 general manager Roman Hladík. We’re excited.”
The studio did not share any other details about the project. Its most recent release was the 2020 Mafia: Definitive Edition, a remake of the original 2002 game. According to a Kotaku report published earlier this year, Hanger 13 suffered multiple layoffs after completing work on Mafia III in 2016. After the cancellation of a game that Hanger 13 was working on, 2K provided $ 50 million in funding to the studio.
That same month, Kotaku released a separate report revealing that the studio was working on a Mafia game set in Italy and based on Unreal Engine 5. It is unclear whether this project is the 2K and Hanger 13 game announced today.
