Created by JRR Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) and The Hobbit series are among the world’s best-loved works due to both books and movies. For this reason, new developments about these productions cause excitement for millions of people. We know that on September 2, The Rings of Power, a Lord of the Rings series, will meet with us on Amazon Prime. This highly anticipated production will take place thousands of years before the familiar LOTR story.
While the excited wait for the series continues, there has been another important development about the Lord of the Rings. Middle-earth Enterprises, which holds the rights to these two works by JRR Tolkien, has been acquired by a Swedish-based game company.
New movies about iconic characters from the LOTR universe may come
Sweden-based game company Embrace Group has acquired Middle-earth Enterprises, which holds the rights to movies, games, souvenirs and theme parks for works such as The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It was stated that the company could make spin-off films based on the characters we know from Middle-earth after this undisclosed purchase.
A spokesperson from Embrace stated that they will be able to make additional films based on iconic characters from JRR Tolkien’s works such as Gandalf, Gollum, Aragorn, Galadriel, Eowyn. He also added that they will provide new opportunities for fans to explore the universe.
It should be added that this purchase was somewhat surprising. Many people expected the rights of the works to be taken by giant names in the entertainment industry, especially Amazon. This did not happen, however, and those rights went to Embrace. The publishing rights of the books are not included in the purchase; Let’s add that this right resides in the Tolkien Estate, the legal body that manages Tolkien’s property, and publisher HarperCollins. The duo also controls the famous author’s works The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales.
Embrace, which is mostly known for games developed for PC and console, bought the rights of the popular series Tomb Raider last May.
