Lithium-ion batteries are used almost everywhere, from electric cars to smartphones. Despite the wide usage area, these batteries also have certain problems. In order to prevent these problems, studies continue for new battery technologies.

Oxygen-ion batteries have many different advantages

Continuing its research on battery technologies, Vienna Technical University succeeded in developing oxygen-ion batteries with significant advantages. Although they do not have as high energy densities as lithium-ion batteries, these batteries can regain their storage capacity over time with their renewable properties. Thus, these batteries can provide an extremely long service life.

It is stated that oxygen-ion batteries, which can be produced without rare elements, will not cause any supply problems. The fact that it is made of non-combustible materials stands out as another important advantage of this new technology.

For the new battery technology, the Technical University of Vienna has already filed a patent application together with its cooperation partners in Spain. Oxygen-ion batteries are thought to be an excellent solution, especially for large energy storage systems produced from renewable sources.

The materials that the Vienna Technical University team worked on, which succeeded in producing batteries with ceramic materials instead of metals, store energy with the movement of oxygen ions with twice the negative charge. When the oxygen ions in the new batteries are excited, electric current is produced by passing from one ceramic material to another.
