We all sometimes share the passwords of our mobile internet with a guest who comes to our house, sometimes with our downstairs neighbor or with our friends when necessary. However, a new decision from the Supreme Court seems to cause us to reconsider this habit.
According to the news of Birgül Yazıcı from TRT Haber, the Supreme Court made a remarkable decision regarding crimes committed on the Internet. It was decided that the owner of the internet line where the device used with the people who shared insulting content was connected to the internet should also pay non-pecuniary damages.
Innocence needs to be proven:
According to this decision, let’s say you shared your internet password with a friend and he/she committed an insult or any crime on the internet. In this scenario, since you are the owner of the internet line, you are held ‘responsible’ together with the person who committed the crime.
Explaining the situation, Lawyer Emel Özbek said, “In its final decision, the Supreme Court held both the owner of the IP address and the person using it jointly responsible. In criminal terms, you have to prove your innocence.” In other words, in such a case, you have to prove that you are innocent in order not to pay the aforementioned non-pecuniary damage or face any penalty.
