The Google Camera application built into the Pixel series can be installed on other smartphones with mods prepared by third-party developers. GCam is frequently preferred by those who find its shooting quality and capabilities more successful than the built-in camera software on their devices. The features of the application can be activated, albeit partially, on the phone on which it is installed with mods.
OnePlus has made a decision that will anger Google Camera users. It turned out that it will limit access to the application on smartphones. Upon the application of the limitation, which also exists on the ColorOS-installed devices of the sister company OPPO, by OnePlus, users started a series of reactions.
Google Camera limitation will start with OxygenOS 12 (Android 12)
According to the information conveyed by Android Police, Google Camera will not be allowed to access the auxiliary camera sensors on OnePlus devices with Android 12-based OxygenOS 12. The non-primary ultra-wide-angle camera, macro and telephoto sensors will only be authorized to work with OnePlus’ own camera app.
On the other hand, the access limitation does not cover the main camera. This means that the Google Camera can still be used on OnePlus smartphones. However, since the application will not be able to access auxiliary cameras such as macro or telephoto lenses, it will not be able to take advantage of the capabilities of these sensors. In other words, GCam will no longer function fully.
OxygenOS 12 reaction from users: ‘Do not update’
The fact that the Google Camera limitation, which also exists on OPPO’s ColorOS smartphones, will come to OnePlus has caused confusion. In a Telegram group where APK files of the GCam application are shared, the statements ‘If you want GCam to work with all sensors of your smartphone, do not install the OxygenOS 12 update!’
OxygenOS 12 update was released for OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro last week. However, error reports from users led OnePlus to take a step back. The company has withdrawn the OxygenOS 12 update. He shared the information that he will make it available again after fixing software problems such as detected faulty animations and corrupted autofill.
However, OnePlus did not make any statements regarding the Google Camera limitation. Although users wish the company to return from this decision, there is no official information for now.
