While even 5G technology has not yet become fully widespread, an important development has taken place that will bring us one step closer to the sixth generation mobile communication era. Engineers from LG Electronics and the Heinrich Hertz Fraunhofer Institute (HHI) have managed to triple the distance record for 6G data transmission.

While 5G and previous technologies use frequencies below 100 GHz, 6G will go beyond these limits to take advantage of the currently obsolete terahertz (THz) spectrum. This will provide significant advantages such as data transfer rates 50 times faster than 5G and latency of only 10% of 5G.

Researchers from LG and HHI set a new distance record for data transmission over 6G technology. The team transmitted data to a distance of 320 meters outdoors in the frequency range of 155 to 175 GHz. Previously, data was transmitted over a distance of 100 meters. With the last test, the previous record was tripled.

Why is it important?

Being able to transfer data over a 6G network over a distance of more than 300 meters is extremely impressive, given that one of the main disadvantages of 6G is its short range. To achieve this, the team used amplifiers at the beginning and end of the signal path.

The progress made allowed the researchers to increase the data transmission distance to a new record of 320 meters. More importantly, it marks the passing of a technical milestone. In urban areas, 6G base stations need to be placed at intervals of about 250 meters. Therefore, exceeding this distance is seen as an important step towards the establishment of such stations in cities.
