Nearly two decades before the world started talking about the metaverse, Second Life allowed millions of users to join virtual worlds. Although this virtual world lived its golden age for a while, it could not escape from being far behind its bright days afterwards. But now, after all this time, developer Linden Labs has announced that it has developed a mobile version of the game. A beta version is expected to be released later this year.

The publisher has detailed some details about the mobile app in a YouTube video posted on Second Life’s community forum. It is being built using Unity, essentially it will be possible to run the game on both iOS and Android phones/tablets.

More than 73 million accounts have been created for Second Life to date, and the number of active users reached 900,000 during the pandemic, 17 years after the game’s launch. Typical virtual events include “live music performances, shopping fairs, fan fiction gatherings, book and poetry readings, academic lectures, fashion shows, and art exhibitions,” the company told Vice in 2020.

Linden Labs was also working on a VR version of the game called Sansar, but eventually stopped development and sold the rights in 2020. And now it looks like he wants to try his luck in the mobile world. But time will tell if people will continue to be interested in Second Life after all this time.
