The Meta (Facebook) Portal, which was first announced in 2018 and makes it easier for people to make video calls, has come to the end of the road. Meta; He announced that he completely gave up on the consumer market for Portal models, which could not catch up with competitors such as Amazon and Google.
Meta gave up for Portal after four years
Meta, which has completely turned its face to the metaverse since last year, continues to transform its old services as well. The social media giant announced that it has changed its strategy on its smart screens called Portal. The Portal family, which has been on sale for four years, will now only be offered to companies as a business device.
Facebook Portal was launched in 2018 as a smart screen where you can make video calls via WhatsApp and Messenger. However, the latest models of the device also had support for Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
Portal smart screens are not actually completely canceled. In the statement from Meta, a “consumer-oriented” Portal will no longer be up for sale. The company’s new focus will be on repositioning the product as a business device rather than a consumer.
Meta did not detail how it will proceed for Portal products. However, it brought compatibility with Portal Go and Portal+, which debuted last year, and Zoom and Microsoft services. This could allow Portal to become a tool for hybrid work.
We’re seeing some pretty big changes in the company’s behind-the-scenes strategy. It was reported that an AR device originally planned only for private customers was delayed. It also suspended its alleged smartwatch, which would be an Apple Watch rival.
As we mentioned before, Meta has decided to cancel the smartwatch model that has been under development for more than two years.
