Microsoft has announced that it is investigating reports of blue screen errors containing the “UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR” (unsupported processor) error message that appeared on some Windows 11 computers after installing an update released earlier this week. The last KB5029351 update released by Microsoft included the usual monthly fixes, but it seems that the update is causing problems on some MSI motherboards.

Windows 11 KB5029351 update causes problems

“We are currently investigating to determine if this is a Microsoft issue. We will provide an update when we have more information,” Microsoft said in a support note. As far as it can be seen, all users who encounter problems have MSI motherboard-based Intel systems using up-to-date BIOS.

Microsoft currently appears to have pulled the KB5029351 update from affected systems, but it’s still available for everyone else. It’s not yet clear what’s causing the issue, but it may be linked to recent BIOS updates from MSI in preparation for Intel’s 14th Gen desktop CPUs codenamed Raptor Lake-S Refresh. According to the patch notes, MSI has recently released a series of BIOS updates for the Z690 and Z790 motherboards that “support next-gen CPUs.”

Therefore, if you are using Z690 and Z790 series MSI motherboards, we recommend that you do not update KB5029351 until the issue is fixed. Or if you have already installed this update but your BIOS is not at the latest version, we also recommend you to update the BIOS after the problem is fixed.
