AMD’s Radeon drivers have a long and troubled history of reliability and performance issues. However, in recent years, the company has soaked up its past with mature and stable driver versions, and the frequency of serious problems has decreased considerably. However, the latest Radeon Software Adrenalin 23.7.2 driver is reminiscent of the company’s past days.

Latest AMD driver causing performance issue

A user with a Ryzen 7 7840U with Radeon Software Adrenalin version 23.7.2 (Twitter/X @carygolomb reported that the driver update accidentally changed the internal GPU from a Radeon 780M to a slower Radeon 760M, reducing performance to that level. Beyond that, the user also states that some internal and external devices, including fingerprint reader, sound card and Xbox 360 game controller, do not work after the new driver.

Digital Foundry also confirmed poor performance issues with the new driver. According to the review organization, the AyaNeo handheld console using the Ryzen 7 7840U experienced a 33 percent performance drop after the new driver. It is also worth adding that the Ryzen 7 7840U is also featured in ASUS’ ROG Ally model.

It is stated by AMD that in the same driver version, the high idle power consumption problem on Radeon RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX cards continues. However, AMD announced that it fixed this problem in the previous driver update. If you have an AMD graphics card and are happy with your current driver, you can skip the update.
