Japanese auto giant Toyota managed to increase its competition in market share in 2020, despite the difficulties brought by the coronavirus. So much so that the company overtook Volkswagen, the best-selling brand in the world in 2019, and became the best-selling car manufacturer of 2020. As we have just entered the year 2022, Toyota also shared its data for 2021 today.

According to the statement made by Toyota, the company managed to dominate all automobile sales in the world this year. According to the shared data, Toyota sold a total of 9.56 million cars during 2021. This number was 9.53 million in 2020. The closest competitor to Toyota, Volkswagen AG, could not keep up with Toyota.

Volkswagen has also experienced a decline in its sales this year:

Volkswagen shared its own data with Toyota today. Volkswagen’s picture, on the other hand, was not upwards like Toyota. The German automobile giant, whose sales decreased by 15% in 2020 compared to the previous year and sold 9.31 million cars, saw a decrease in its sales this year as well. Volkswagen sold a total of 8.88 million cars in 2021. Sales fell 4.5%.

The main reason for this decline in automobile sales was of course the disruptions in the supply chain. Although Japanese automobile giant Toyota managed to avoid these disruptions as much as possible, Volkswagen and other automobile companies were not so successful in this regard. Volkswagen’s sales, which includes Audi, Porsche and many brands, decreased by 2.7% in Western Europe and 14.1% in China.
