Krafton, the studio behind PUBG, has announced a new partnership with blockchain company Solana Labs. The agreement indicates that the two companies will collaborate in the development, operation, design and marketing of blockchain and NFT-based games and services. Solana Labs is developing the Solana blockchain, an Ethereum competitor designed to offer fast transactions at low cost.
The partnership comes a little over a month after Krafton announced its intention to enter the blockchain gaming world and said it would be working with Naver Z to create a new Web 3.0 and NFT project aimed at building an NFT metaverse platform.
Perhaps what matters to these deals may be Krafton’s share price. The Financial Times notes that, following pressure from regulators in Beijing, South Korea has seen a sharp decline this year amid fierce competition from Chinese competitors pouring into its home market. However, the South Korean studio “play-to-earn
, which Korean developers have integrated with blockchain technology to increase revenue, has not disclosed which games will have blockchain functionality added or integrated into the featured PUBG lineup. The PC version of the game has since turned into a free game.” While growing in popularity earlier this year, PUBG Mobile has been downloaded more than 1 billion times. A second free-to-play mobile PUBG game, PUBG: New State, was released last year
Krafton’s Web 3.0 leader, Hyungchul Park, said, “Krafton, He will continue to continually seek ways to work closely with blockchain companies like Solana Labs as we work to build our Web 3.0 ecosystem.” Through this collaboration, Krafton will gain the insight needed to accelerate its investment and output in blockchain-based experiences.”
