DeFi platform WonderFi Technolohies, backed by Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary, has acquired Toronto-based Coinberry exchange for $31 million.

O’Leary described the purchase as “extremely important” and stressed the importance of access to cryptocurrencies.

Earlier this year, the company bought BitBuy, one of Canada’s leading exchanges, for $161.8 million. With the deal, the company suddenly had 370,000 customers.

O’Leary, who used the term “trash” for Bitcoin in 2019, has become a prominent crypto advocate over time, revealing that he has allocated 3% of his portfolio to crypto.

O’Leary later also said that Bitcoin could become the world’s new reserve currency. Finally, he claimed at the Bitcoin conference that the asset could save the world.

O’Leary announced in early March that he has allocated one-fifth of his portfolio to stocks of cryptocurrency and blockchain-related companies.

O’Leary also became a spokesperson for the FTX exchange in August.
