The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) highlighted the value of CBDC and asked the public to share their views on the digital currency.
CBK expressed that a potential CBDC could positively impact the local financial system and would like to know what the public thinks.
According to CBK, introducing a CBDC can facilitate cross-border payments, while also making payments more efficient and less costly, he said.
Despite the positive attitude towards CBDC, the central bank has released a discussion paper to find out what the public thinks about it. People who want to express their opinions must submit their comments until 20 May 2022.
The Central Bank of Kenya added that CBDC could protect citizens from risks by providing more secure payment services than private cryptos.
Another African country, Zambia, has also announced that it will complete its CBDC research by the end of 2021.
