Online shopping, which has become widespread with the pandemic, has become the number one address for finding alternatives for Christmas gifts. Many shopping sites are trying to attract the attention of users with special discounts for the New Year. Cybercriminals, who tend to be more active on special days and holidays, continue to defraud users by taking advantage of the opportunity for the New Year this year.

Online shopping scams can waste money and time. People need to pay more attention to websites, products and payment infrastructures against possible fraudulent activities. Global cybersecurity and digital privacy company Kaspersky has shared tips for online shoppers for the New Year.

  • If you receive a link via email to a great offer, be sure to check the embedded hyperlink. Access the website directly from the legitimate website, if available.
  • Get a special card for online shopping and do not spend large sums on it.
  • Shop only from official sites and beware of their web address if you are directed to them from other landing pages. If they differ from the official seller, check the offer you’ve been redirected to on the official website.
  • Use security solutions with behavior-based anti-phishing technologies such as Kaspersky Security Cloud or Kaspersky Total Security that will notify you when you try to visit a phishing web page.
  • Never use the same password for different websites or multiple services. Because if one is stolen, all your accounts will become vulnerable. Use password managers like Kaspersky Password Manager to create strong passwords without having to face the hassle of remembering.
  • Prefer payment systems called 3D Secure to prevent theft and fraud during payment
  • Make sure that the shopping site has security standards such as SSL or SET.
