German car company BMW and Japanese Toyota have been working together on various models for a long time. Although the two companies have previously partnered for Supra and Z4, it looks like this partnership will diversify even more in the coming period. The target of the duo is hydrogen fuel cell-powered cars.
The two giants of the automotive industry aim to start the mass production and sale of cars with hydrogen fuel cells developed jointly by 2025. The first statements on the subject came from the BMW front.
Preparation for hydrogen fuel cell models from BMW and Toyota
Making a statement on the subject, Pieter Nota, the head of sales of BMW, stated that BMW thinks hydrogen fuel cell technology is suitable for larger SUV models. Considering the increasing interest in the SUV market in recent years, it is not surprising that BMW has focused on this segment. Moreover, BMW has previously stated that it wants to benefit from hydrogen power in the X7.
Of course, we will have to wait until 2025 to see a hydrogen fuel cell BMW model. First of all, the company will start limited production for the iX5 Hydrogen Concept, which it introduced at the Munich Motor Show last year. For this reason, hydrogen fuel cell models will be released three years later.
The German firm plans to make up at least half of its car sales, including the Mini and Rolls-Royce brands, from electric cars by 2030. In this process, the hydrogen fuel cell technology chosen by the company to diversify its products is expected to develop in terms of infrastructure.
