NASA carried out the last manned lunar mission with Apollo 17 in 1972. After almost 50 years, plans started to be made again. Then, the tender was made for the company that will build the spacecraft. After the fight between Blue Origin’s owner Jeff Bezos and SpaceX, Elon Musk was the winner.
After the tender, Blue Origin and its contractor Dynetics started protests. He then complained NASA to the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) on the grounds that it was anticompetitive for a single company to undertake such a large contract and the selection process was biased.
Jeff Bezos was the loser in the lawsuit against SpaceX and NASA!
NASA shows that it is determined to go to the moon in 2024 with the Artemis program. Elon Musk, the winner of the tender for approximately 3 billion dollars, has also set his mind to build the spacecraft. Except for SpaceX, all the bids in the tender were asking for almost twice the price.
Allegedly, Bezos wrote an open letter to NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, making a number of proposals. The most talked about one was that he offered to close this price difference, which was almost half, by undertaking 2 billion dollars of land development projects and to find a middle ground.
Jeff Bezos chose to go to court in August when this offer was also rejected. According to the court record, Bezos called it “illegal and improper” for NASA to consider proposals under the HLS program. Six months later, US Federal Court of Claims Judge Richard Hertling decided that there was no inappropriate situation.
Of course, this decision is sealed for now. So it’s not clear who won. However, Elon Musk, who came to the fore with his pranks on social media, could not hide the situation any longer by sharing a photo from the 1995 movie Judge Dredd under CNBC reporter Michael Sheetz’s tweet.
