Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said they plan to launch the country’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) this year.

Holness yesterday, in a speech opening the parliamentary year 2022-2023, said the country’s CBDC will be launched this year. Holness also tweeted:

“This will serve as a foundation for Jamaica’s digital payments architecture, facilitating greater financial inclusion, increasing transaction speed and reducing the cost of banking for the people of Jamaica. ”
