Elon Musk’s decision to rebrand his Twitter company as X is also on the agenda of other companies. Although there have been many shares on social media about the new name and logo, it turned out that Meta and Microsoft have already patented the name X.
Meta and Microsoft pre-patent the X logo
Twitter’s new brand “X” could face legal issues due to existing trademarks owned by other tech companies. In fact, according to the claim of a trademark lawyer, there will be a 100 percent chance of being sued by another company because of Twitter’s new name.
Two potential lawsuits Twitter could face could come from Microsoft and Meta. Microsoft has trademarked the letter X in connection with the Xbox family since 2003. Meta, on the other hand, patented the blue-white X logo for use in software and social media services in 2019.
It’s worth noting that Meta and Microsoft have yet to attempt lawsuits. However, if there is a brand equity threat to the letter X, litigation seems likely. It should also be noted that it can create confusion for users.
Trademark lawyers think Twitter will have a hard time maintaining its brand value. For example, one lawyer said, “The logo doesn’t have much distinguishing features, so its privacy will be very limited.”
This is similar to the problems Meta faced when migrating from Facebook, its old name. For example, Meta was previously sued by investment firm Metacapital and virtual reality company MetaX.
