The widespread use of smartphones, computers and the internet has changed our lives drastically. For example, we have largely forgotten FM radios. Also, our TV watching habits have changed. The latest data on this subject reveals that the rate of those who watch traditional television broadcasts has decreased more than ever before.
The latest research by Nielsen, a global data analysis company, revealed striking statistics on TV usage. According to the researches, the rate of turning on the TV and watching the contents of the television channels no longer constitutes even half of the time spent in front of the TV. In other words, people now spend more than half of their TV time on apps like YouTube, Netflix or TikTok, or game consoles.
The rate of watching television channels decreased by 12.5% on an annual basis.
According to Nielsen data, the rate of watching television channels is decreasing significantly on an annual basis. In this context; The rate of those who turn on the TV and watch a program in the period of July 2022 – July 2023 decreased by 12.5 percent. Not only that. Watch times of the programs on the channels also decreased. According to research, we’re flipping through channels almost a third of the time the TV is on. Nielsen states that the most popular streaming platforms used on TVs are YouTube and Netflix. In fact, according to Nielsen, these two platforms broke the usage record in July 2023. Research has revealed that streaming platforms’ watch time has reached nearly 40 percent of all TV watch time.
As a matter of fact, what happened is not so surprising. It is obvious that traditional television culture will eventually end, but time will tell when that will happen.
