Finally, Telegram joins the list of social media and instant messaging apps with Stories. Although this format was first introduced by Snapchat in 2013, it was quickly adopted by other apps due to its immense popularity. Stories allow users to post updates about their recent activity, which usually disappear after 24 hours.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov announced on his channel that Telegram Stories will go live in early July, adding that the feature is in the “final testing phase”. However, Telegram Stories is expected to offer a similar experience to other apps, as well as have its own changes that the company will make.

Why so late?

According to Durov, they were initially reluctant to roll out Stories as the feature was already ubiquitous. However, they eventually decided to develop the feature, as Stories accounted for more than half of all feature requests Telegram received.

Telegram Stories will be at the top of the chat list with an expandable UI designed to stay compact when not in use. You can choose to have a story expire in 6, 12, 24 or 48 hours, and you’ll have the option to permanently view the stories on your profile page as well.

You will be able to record videos, add captions, add emojis and tag people using your phone’s front and rear cameras simultaneously while publishing a story. On the privacy side, Telegram will offer you the ability to choose whether your stories are viewed by everyone, only by your contacts, by a select few, or by some close friends.

The Stories format is already used by many social media apps such as Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger and Tiktok. However, this feature has not been very successful on YouTube and LinkedIn, which are trying to keep up with the flow. Twitter also launched its own version of the story, called Fleets, but discontinued it nine months later. Let’s see how much will Stories be liked by Telegram users?
