Disturbed by this situation, Jacobs decided that he had to leave records of how we lived for future civilizations to study. He decided that it would be useful, even that it was our “archaeological task”. He designed the first modern time capsule, a term he would later use for the first time.

The crypt is hidden in the basement of Oglethorpe University Jacobs also took into account that there would likely be a language barrier between us and the people who found this treasure. For this reason, there is also a device designed to teach English to those who find the crypt. The hand-operated device displayed pictures of objects and its name in English. A voice on the phonograph was saying the name aloud at the same time.
The opening date of the time capsule was determined as 8113 AD. Jacobs said it had been 6,177 years since the Egyptian calendar was created in 1936, when he thought of the idea. He wanted the person who opened this capsule to glimpse for a moment the midpoint between his day and the Ancient Egyptians.
Four years after he came up with this idea, it was sealed to be found again thousands of years later as World War II began. But the optimistic view of humanity’s longevity was in stark contrast to the note Jacobs left in the vault: “Earth is busy burying our civilization forever, and here in this vault we leave it to you.”
