Netflix, which recently announced that it will not implement the obligation to broadcast Russian channels in Russia, has now decided to impose a greater sanction on the country. The streaming giant announced that it has completely suspended its activities in the country after Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
Netflix had four original Russian productions, including a crime thriller directed by Dasha Zhuk, which had begun filming but was put on hold when the invasion began. With the new decision, not only are these productions suspended, but Netflix is completely shutting down in Russia.
A Netflix spokesperson explained the current situation, saying, “Given the current circumstances, we have decided to suspend our service in Russia.”
After Russia’s attack on Ukraine, many large companies announced the decision to withdraw from Russia or suspend their activities. While companies like Microsoft, Apple and Samsung have announced they are suspending sales in the country, Ikea has closed its stores, Nike has said it will not be fulfilling online orders. Major film studios have also stopped their films from being released in Russia. This includes the new Batman movie.
Netflix, which has 222 million subscribers worldwide, started its service in Russia in 2016. According to estimates, the company has one million subscribers in Russia.
