The Clubhouse app, which shined during the COVID-19 pandemic, but then fell as fast as its debut, is back – albeit in a slightly different form. The app that popularized social voice rooms is reconfiguring itself to “be more like a messaging app,” with new voice-only group chats called “chats,” as the company detailed in a blog post.
Think of a conversation like a group Instagram story to which you contribute your voice. You start a conversation by recording a voice message, which you can then send to your friends. They can also create a kind of audio collage/chat by adding their own voice recordings.
The app has been completely redesigned for these new chats. When you open the newly updated app, you are asked to start a new chat and share. Chats are also the first to appear in the new main tab in the app, and if you have friends using Clubhouse, their chats will appear in the main tab as well.
You can still create the live social voice rooms that made Clubhouse popular, but this feature seems a bit buried. Still, Clubhouse says live rooms “will continue to be a central part of Clubhouse.”
The revised app is available on iOS and Android.
