USA needs 20 years
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang believes it could take up to two decades for the United States to become self-sufficient in chip production. However, the chip industry is expanding at a pace not seen in America in decades, so he is considered too skeptical. Speaking at a conference he attended, Jensen Huang said, “We are somewhere between ten and twenty years away from supply chain independence.”
The US government is pursuing active policies to increase chip production within its borders. This initiative, which has bipartisan support, focuses on establishing more manufacturing facilities within the country. The USA aims to reduce dependence on foreign resources and strengthen the national technology infrastructure.
So far, the plan seems to be progressing successfully, with Intel, TSMC and Samsung Foundry building their advanced and pioneering factories in the US. Additionally, Micron is preparing to bring advanced 3D NAND and DRAM memory production to America for the first time in decades. Intel is also building advanced chip packaging facilities in America. There are also companies in the US, such as GlobalFoundries, that produce chips on proprietary and mature process technologies.
However, Huang noted that Nvidia’s products rely on a multitude of components from different parts of the world, and he doesn’t think they will all be manufactured in the United States anytime soon. Therefore, we can say that Huang’s assessments reflect the company’s current dependence on international supply chains and the complexity of the global chip industry.
