YouTube is gradually introducing a new feature called ‘Stable Volume’ to its users, but it is not yet clear what this feature does. Judging by the name, it’s probably trying to keep the volume of YouTube videos the same so you don’t turn up the volume for a silent video and pop your ears on the next video.
This feature was first noticed by a Reddit user with the nickname OwenTheHugger, and a screenshot of the YouTube app includes an option to enable Stable Volume. One Reddit commenter wondered if this was a new AI feature, but another user said that YouTube doesn’t need to use AI to keep the volume constant between videos.
We couldn’t find any references to this feature on YouTube’s Help page, so we’re not 100 percent sure what it does or how it works.
If the new Stable Volume feature does indeed make all videos play at the same volume, hopefully the company will roll it out to everyone quickly. It will greatly improve the experience when switching from video to video and can sometimes be applied to ads playing at a different volume.
