Meta continues to (slowly) separate aspects of Threads from Instagram. Adam Mosseri, the app’s senior manager, said in an update that Threads users can now delete their accounts on the app without deleting their Instagram profile. Despite this change, both applications will still remain very closely connected.

How to delete Threads account?

To delete the Threads account, you can follow Settings -> Account -> Freeze or delete profile. In this way, users will now be able to delete or freeze their existing Threads profiles separately from their Instagram accounts.

This change has been a long-requested feature among Threads users, with many frustrated by the inability to clear their Threads profiles without deleting their Instagram accounts as well. The update comes shortly after Meta introduced another settings change that allows Threads users to opt out of their posts showing up in Instagram and Facebook’s feeds. It looks like Meta is trying to keep Threads on its own feet.

But despite all these changes, Instagram and Threads are still very closely connected. An Instagram account is required to join Threads, and the app’s only messaging feature relies on Instagram’s inbox. Threads also leverages users’ Instagram profiles for recommendations and other features. While it’s unlikely Meta will completely separate the two services, it is stated that Threads could eventually become more independent.

Because Meta said it aims to make Threads compatible with ActivityPub, the open source protocol that powers Mastodon and other services in the fediverse. The company hasn’t shared much about how this will work, but the integration will give social media users new ways to engage with Threads content even if they choose to stay away from Instagram. Finally, according to current data, Threads has nearly 100 million monthly users.
