Select Starlink customers can now access a new “portability” feature and take satellite internet with them. A user in the Starlink subreddit on Reddit posted an image of a message stating that you can move your internet connection to a new location for an extra $25 per month.
There are some restrictions on this service as stated on the official support page. You cannot take the connection to another continent, but you can take it to another country. If you decide to take Starlink to another country, you can only stay in that country for two months. After this period, you need to change your registered address to a new one and then purchase another Starlink service.
The same is true if you stay in your home country but leave your home for too long. However, no clear timeframe seems to have been given for this scenario. Starlink states that if you stay away from your registered location for too long, you will have to change addresses, but no specific time frame is given.
Also, it is not possible to use Starlink while on the go, as it will not work. The company is currently working to make this possible, but there is no set release date yet. Starlink also warns that a good connection is not guaranteed. Starlink states that because it prioritizes the registered service address, going elsewhere will disrupt the connection to some extent, especially during “…heavy usage or network congestion” times.
However, the portability feature seems to work quite well for some customers. YouTuber Dave Lee posted a picture on his Twitter account using the StarLink connection while camping. It had a download speed of 145 Mbps.
Starlink’s service is getting better day by day. According to a recent internet speed report from Ookla, Starlink was the fastest internet satellite provider in Q4 2021. The services achieved an average download speed of 104.97 Mbps. In second place was Viasat with 21.81 Mbps.
